What Is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that was used extensively in building materials through much of the 20th century. In fact, until the 1990's more than 3000 different building materials contained asbestos, the most popular of which was insulation. Asbestos is resistant to heat, electricity, and corrosion, these qualities made asbestos very useful in construction but high toxic as well. Even though Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM) are no longer used, they can still be found in many homes and commercial buildings.
When ACM's are disturbed, asbestos can be released into the air and this can have serious health implications for humans. Asbestos can cause asbestosis and many different forms of cancer including Mesothelioma, which can take up to 50 years for symptoms to emerge after exposure.
